About Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr, the 'festival of breaking the fast', begins the Islamic month of Shawwal. It starts with a special prayer (Salat al-Eid) and charity (Zakat al-Fitr), and continues with family visits and festive food. It is a public holiday across the Muslim world and a gazetted holiday in India (Id-ul-Fitr).
The Islamic calendar is lunar, about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Eid moves earlier every year. The dates here are the expected dates for India; Gulf countries often celebrate a day earlier, and official dates are confirmed only after moon sighting.
