About Diwali
Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs, and is a gazetted (national) holiday in India and a public holiday in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, and Trinidad and Tobago. The main day is Lakshmi Puja, held on Amavasya, the new-moon night of Kartika. It sits in the middle of a five-day run of festivities: Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi, Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj.
Homes are lit with diyas (oil lamps) and rangoli, families exchange sweets and gifts, and many businesses start a new financial year. Muhurat trading, a special one-hour session on India's stock exchanges, is held on the evening of Diwali.
