About the Square Fee Calculator

Square charges a flat rate per payment that depends on how the card is taken. On the US Free plan, tapping, dipping or swiping a card costs 2.6% + 15¢. Online payments through Square Online or checkout links cost 3.3% + 30¢. A manually keyed card, or a card on file, costs 3.5% + 15¢. Invoices paid by ACH bank transfer cost 1% with a $1 minimum, and Cash App Afterpay costs 6% + 30¢.

The paid Plus plan lowers two of those rates: in person to 2.5% + 15¢ and online to 2.9% + 30¢, and it caps ACH invoices at $10. Whether Plus pays for itself depends on your volume and the subscription price for your business type. Enter your typical sale under both plans to see the difference per payment.

Below the result, the calculator shows the same sale under every payment method, which makes it clear why keyed-in payments cost the most. They carry the highest fraud risk because the card isn't present. As with most processors, Square keeps its fee when you refund.

Examples

In person, $50 → $1.45, you receive $48.55
Online, $50 → $1.95
Keyed in, $50 → $1.90

Frequently asked questions

5 answers
How much does Square charge per transaction?
On the US Free plan, 2.6% + 15¢ in person, 3.3% + 30¢ online and 3.5% + 15¢ for keyed-in cards.
Why are keyed-in payments more expensive?
A typed-in card number carries more fraud risk than a chip or tap, so card networks charge more and Square passes that on.
Does Square refund fees on refunds?
No. Square keeps the processing fee when you refund a payment.
Is Square Plus worth it?
It saves 0.1 percentage points in person, 0.4 online, and caps ACH invoices at $10. Multiply those savings by your monthly volume and compare with the subscription price Square quotes for your business.
Is anything I type sent to PayPal, Stripe or anyone else?
No. The fee schedules are built into the page and every calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you enter leaves your device.
