About the Payment Fee Comparison

Most US processors charge a percentage plus a fixed fee, but the mix decides who's cheapest. A low percentage with a 30¢ or 49¢ fixed fee is fine for large payments and costly for small ones. Venmo's 10¢ fixed fee wins on small payments, while Stripe's ACH Direct Debit is capped at $5, so it's by far the cheapest for big invoices. The bars show each provider's fee for your exact amount.

The comparison uses each provider's standard published US price: PayPal Checkout (3.49% + 49¢), PayPal goods and services (2.99%), PayPal advanced card processing (2.89% + 49¢), Venmo business (1.9% + 10¢), Stripe cards (2.9% + 30¢), Square online (3.3% + 30¢) and Shopify Payments on the Basic plan (2.9% + 30¢), plus the in-person options from Square, Stripe Terminal and PayPal. Tick international to add each provider's cross-border surcharge where it has one.

Fees aren't the whole story. Shopify and Square Plus have monthly subscriptions, PayPal's checkout can lift conversion because buyers trust it, and payout speed, chargeback handling and features differ. Use the comparison to see the price gap, then open each provider's own calculator for the details.

Frequently asked questions

5 answers
Is Stripe or PayPal cheaper?
For a standard US card payment, Stripe (2.9% + 30¢) is cheaper than PayPal Checkout (3.49% + 49¢): $3.20 against $3.98 on $100. PayPal's goods-and-services rate (2.99%, no fixed fee) is cheaper still between PayPal accounts.
What is the cheapest way to accept a large payment?
A bank debit. Stripe's ACH Direct Debit costs 0.8% capped at $5, so a $5,000 invoice costs $5 instead of about $145 by card.
Why does the cheapest option change with the amount?
Fixed fees weigh more on small payments, and percentages weigh more on large ones. Try $5, $50 and $500 to see the order change.
Are these rates negotiable?
Large businesses can often get custom pricing from PayPal, Stripe and Square. The comparison uses the standard published prices.
Is anything I type sent to PayPal, Stripe or anyone else?
No. The fee schedules are built into the page and every calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you enter leaves your device.
