TGA vs PNG — what changes
  • TGANone or RLE (lossless) · 8, 15, 16, 24 or 32 bits per pixel · alpha: 8-bit alpha (32-bit files)
  • PNGLossless (Deflate) · 1–16 bits per channel, palette or true colour · alpha: Full 8-bit alpha
  • TipIf a 32-bit TGA appears fully transparent elsewhere, its alpha byte is unused — this converter detects all-zero alpha and treats the image as opaque.

How it works — in four simple steps

No signup and nothing to install — it all runs in your browser.

Add TGA files

Drop, choose or paste them — or press the sample preset above.

2

Set the PNG options

If a 32-bit TGA appears fully transparent elsewhere, its alpha byte is unused — this converter detects all-zero alpha and treats the image as opaque.

3

Convert

Press Convert — results appear with a before/after slider, sizes and format details.

4

Download

Save each file or everything as a ZIP.

Pro tip

If a 32-bit TGA appears fully transparent elsewhere, its alpha byte is unused — this converter detects all-zero alpha and treats the image as opaque.

Features

About the TGA to PNG Converter

TGA is a staple of game development, 3D rendering and VFX: Unreal Engine, Blender, 3ds Max and Substance all read and write it, and it stores clean 8-bit alpha. But browsers, image viewers on phones, and websites can't display TGA — PNG keeps the same pixels and alpha and opens everywhere.

Your TGA is read by our own decoder: colour-mapped, true-colour and grayscale images (types 1, 2, 3) and their RLE versions (9, 10, 11), at 8, 15, 16, 24 or 32 bits per pixel, with the origin bits honoured and unused all-zero alpha detected.

The PNG is written by your browser's own encoder, which is lossless — every decoded pixel, including the alpha channel, is stored exactly.

Things to know

Frequently asked questions

5 answers
Why can't I open TGA files on my phone or in Chrome?
Browsers and most mobile viewers have no TGA decoder. This tool includes one, so you can convert to PNG and view or share the image anywhere.
Is the alpha channel kept?
Yes. 32-bit TGAs with 8-bit alpha (and 16-bit files with the 1-bit attribute) become PNGs with transparency.
Is the PNG lossless?
Yes. PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly; nothing more is lost, though nothing lost earlier is restored.
Can a browser open TGA?
Not natively. This page brings its own TGA decoder, so the file is read locally without any plugin or upload.
Is my image uploaded?
No. TGA files are decoded and the PNG is created entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server, and EXIF/GPS metadata isn't copied.
