About the PPM to PNG Converter

Netpbm formats are what computer-vision code, ray tracers, image-processing courses and scientific tools write, because they're trivial to produce — a short header followed by pixels. Almost nothing else can display them, so PNG is the way to view and share the results.

Your Netpbm file is read by our own decoder: P1–P6 in ASCII or binary, PAM (P7) with or without alpha, comments in headers, and maxval up to 65,535 (16-bit samples are scaled to 8 bits).

The PNG is written by your browser's own encoder, which is lossless — every decoded pixel, including the alpha channel, is stored exactly.

Things to know

Frequently asked questions

5 answers
What's the difference between PPM, PGM and PBM?
PPM is full colour (RGB), PGM is grayscale and PBM is 1-bit black and white. PAM is the generalised version that can also carry alpha.
Are ASCII (P1–P3) files supported?
Yes — plain-text P1, P2 and P3 as well as binary P4, P5, P6 and P7 (PAM).
Is the PNG lossless?
Yes. PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly; nothing more is lost, though nothing lost earlier is restored.
Can a browser open PPM?
Not natively. The Netpbm decoder runs inside this page, so nothing is installed or uploaded.
Is my image uploaded?
No. PPM files are decoded and the PNG is created entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server, and EXIF/GPS metadata isn't copied.
