About the PNG to TGA Converter

Many game engines, modding tools and 3D packages (Unreal, Source, older id Tech games, Blender, 3ds Max) expect TGA for textures and sprites, partly because its alpha channel is simple and unambiguous. PNG to TGA is the usual step when preparing assets.

The PNG is decoded by your browser, alpha included.

The TGA is written by our own Truevision TGA 2.0 encoder: image type 10 (run-length encoded) or 2 (uncompressed) true-colour, 24-bit or 32-bit with 8 alpha bits declared in the descriptor, bottom-left origin, RLE packets that never cross a scanline, and the TGA 2.0 footer signature “TRUEVISION-XFILE.”.

Things to know

Frequently asked questions

4 answers
Does PNG to TGA keep transparency?
Yes. Transparent PNGs become 32-bit TGAs with an 8-bit alpha channel.
RLE or uncompressed TGA?
RLE is lossless and usually far smaller; it's supported by Photoshop, GIMP, Blender and most engines. Uncompressed is the safest for very old tools.
Which programs read these TGA files?
Photoshop, GIMP, Blender, Unreal Engine, Unity, Krita and Paint.NET all read RLE and uncompressed TGA 2.0 files like these.
Is my image uploaded?
No. PNG files are decoded and the TGA is created entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server, and EXIF/GPS metadata isn't copied.
