About the PPM to JPG Converter
A 1920 × 1080 PPM is about 6 MB because Netpbm stores raw pixels. When the image is a render or photo you want to share, JPEG gets it down to a few hundred kilobytes with no visible difference at good quality.
Your Netpbm file is read by our own decoder: P1–P6 in ASCII or binary, PAM (P7) with or without alpha, comments in headers, and maxval up to 65,535 (16-bit samples are scaled to 8 bits).
The JPG is written by your browser's JPEG encoder at the quality you choose; transparent areas are composited onto the fill colour first, since JPEG has no alpha channel.

Things to know
- Lossy compression. JPEG discards detail. Keep the PPM or a PNG if you need exact pixel values for analysis.
- Grayscale stays grayscale. PGM and PBM convert to JPEGs that look gray; they're stored as colour JPEGs with equal channels.
