About the PNG to ICO Converter

An .ico file is a container holding several sizes of the same icon, so Windows can show the right one in the taskbar (16–32 px), desktop (48 px) and large-icon views (256 px), and browsers can use it as favicon.ico. A single resized PNG renamed to .ico isn't the same thing.

The PNG is decoded by your browser, alpha included.

The ICO is assembled by our own encoder: each size is rendered from your image with high-quality stepped downscaling, then stored either as a PNG entry (compact; Windows Vista and later) or as a classic 32-bit BMP entry with an AND transparency mask (works on every Windows version), behind a standard ICONDIR directory.

Things to know

Frequently asked questions

4 answers
What sizes should an ICO file contain?
Windows commonly uses 16, 24, 32, 48 and 256 px; a favicon.ico typically contains 16, 32 and 48. Larger sizes are stored as PNG inside the ICO to keep the file small.
PNG or BMP entries?
PNG-compressed entries are supported since Windows Vista and are much smaller. BMP entries work in every version of Windows. Mixed (BMP up to 48 px, PNG from 64 px) is the usual compromise.
How do I use the ICO as a favicon?
Upload it to your site's root as /favicon.ico, or link it with .
Is my image uploaded?
No. PNG files are decoded and the ICO is created entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server, and EXIF/GPS metadata isn't copied.
