About the DDS to JPG Converter

Mod pages, wikis and Discord servers need screenshots and previews of textures, but nobody can open .dds in a browser. JPG is the smallest universally viewable option for sharing.

Your DDS is read by our own decoder: BC1/DXT1 (with 1-bit alpha), BC2/DXT3, BC3/DXT5, BC4 (ATI1) and BC5 (ATI2, with the normal map's blue channel reconstructed), uncompressed RGB/RGBA/luminance via channel masks, and DX10 extended headers. The largest mip level is shown.

The JPG is written by your browser's JPEG encoder at the quality you choose; transparent areas are composited onto the fill colour first, since JPEG has no alpha channel.

Things to know

Frequently asked questions

5 answers
Why can't I see DDS files in Windows Photos?
Windows Photos and browsers don't decode GPU texture formats. Convert to JPG or PNG to view them anywhere.
Does it support DXT5?
Yes — DXT1, DXT3, DXT5 (BC1–BC3), BC4, BC5 and uncompressed DDS files.
What quality should I choose?
80–90% is visually close to the original for most images at a fraction of the size; 95–100% gives larger files with little visible gain.
Can a browser open DDS textures?
Not natively — browsers don't decode GPU texture formats. This page includes a BC1–BC5 decoder that runs locally.
Is my image uploaded?
No. DDS files are decoded and the JPG is created entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to a server, and EXIF/GPS metadata isn't copied.
