How it works

This answers the question every student asks before finals week: "what do I need on the final to get the grade I want?" The logic is simple once you see it. Your final grade is a blend of two parts — everything you've done so far (which counts for 100% minus the final's weight) and the final exam itself.

So if your final is worth 30%, your current grade already counts for the other 70%. To reach a target D, the final score F must satisfy: F = (D − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a fraction. The calculator works this out and tells you the exact percentage you need.

It also tells you the honest truth: if the number comes out above 100%, your target isn't reachable on the final alone; if it comes out at or below 0%, you've already locked in your grade. Everything runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Use the formula needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a fraction. For a current 85%, a target of 90%, and a final worth 30%, that's (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7% — the calculator does this instantly.
What does the final's weight mean?
It's how much the final exam counts toward your overall course grade — often 20%, 25% or 30%. The rest of your grade (100% minus that weight) comes from everything you've already done.
What if I need more than 100%?
Then your target isn't achievable on the final alone. You'd need to lower your target, or find extra credit or grade corrections. The tool flags this for you.
What if the result is negative?
A zero or negative number means you've already secured your target grade — even a 0% on the final would keep you at or above it.
