How it works

The discount calculator works in two directions. In Apply a discount mode, you enter the original price and the percentage off, and it returns the sale price along with the exact amount you save. The math is simple — savings equal price × discount ÷ 100, and the final price is the remainder — but it's easy to get wrong under time pressure at the till.

Find the discount % mode reverses the question: given an original price and the price actually paid, it works out what percentage discount that represents. This is handy for checking whether an advertised "50% off" is real, or for comparing two deals expressed in different ways.

Both modes update instantly as you type. Because it's pure arithmetic done in your browser, there are no rounding surprises beyond standard two-decimal currency display, and nothing you enter is recorded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the savings, then subtract that from the price. The 'Apply a discount' mode does this automatically.
How do I find the discount percentage from two prices?
Subtract the final price from the original, divide by the original, and multiply by 100. The 'Find the discount %' mode handles it for you.
Does it include sales tax?
No. It calculates the discount only. For tax, use the GST / Sales Tax calculator after finding the discounted price.
Are stacked discounts supported?
Apply them one at a time — take the first discount, then feed the result back in for the second. Stacked percentages don't simply add together.
