Understanding BMI: What the Number Actually Tells You (and What It Doesn't)
Body Mass Index is one of the most widely cited health numbers in the world, and also one of the most misunderstood. It is neither the meaningless fiction some critics claim nor the precise verdict on your health that its authority implies. It is a simple screening tool with real uses and real limits. What BMI is
BMI is a ratio of weight to height: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (or, in imperial units, 703 times your weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared). Where the categories come from

What BMI is genuinely useful for
BMI earns its keep as a quick, cheap, no-equipment screening tool. For clinicians tracking populations, it flags trends that warrant a closer look. For an individual, it is a reasonable first check and a useful thing to track over time — a steady climb in your own BMI across years is a more meaningful signal than a single reading compared to a chart. The important limitations
BMI's biggest flaw is that it uses only height and weight, so it cannot distinguish muscle from fat or tell where fat is stored. A muscular athlete can register as "overweight" or even "obese" despite very low body fat, because muscle is dense. Conversely, someone with low muscle mass can sit in the "normal" range while carrying an unhealthy amount of fat — sometimes called "normal weight obesity."
It also does not account for age, sex, ethnicity, or fat distribution, all of which affect health risk. Abdominal fat, for example, carries more metabolic risk than fat on the hips, but BMI cannot see the difference. And it is not validated the same way for children, pregnant people, or the elderly, who need different measures. None of this makes BMI useless — it makes it a starting point rather than a conclusion.
Better questions than the number
Rather than fixating on a single BMI value, it is more useful to ask a broader set of questions, ideally with a healthcare professional: How is my waist measurement? What do my blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol look like? How is my fitness, strength, and energy? Am I trending in a direction I am happy with? These indicators, taken together, paint a far more accurate picture of health than BMI alone ever could.
BMI works best as one modest data point in that larger picture.
