About the WebP to GIF Converter
Messaging apps, forums and older tools frequently accept GIF but not WebP. Converting keeps the image usable everywhere, and GIF's animation support lets you combine stills into a short loop.
The WebP is decoded by your browser (all current browsers), alpha included; animated WebPs give their first frame.
The GIF is written by our own GIF89a encoder: the image's exact colours are used when there are 256 or fewer, otherwise a median-cut palette is built (optionally with Floyd–Steinberg dithering). Transparent pixels get a reserved palette index declared in a Graphic Control Extension, pixels are LZW-compressed with variable-length codes, and several images can become an animation with a NETSCAPE2.0 loop block.

Things to know
- Colour reduction. WebPs with more than 256 colours are reduced to a 256-colour palette; dithering helps with gradients.
- Soft alpha becomes hard. Partially transparent pixels become fully transparent or opaque.
