JPG to BMP Converter
Convert JPEG photos to BMP for software and devices that only accept bitmaps — 24-bit true colour by default, or 8-bit and 1-bit when file size or the device demands it.

About the JPG to BMP Converter
People convert JPG to BMP when an older Windows program, a CNC or engraving tool, a digital photo frame or an embedded device refuses JPEG. Decoding the JPEG once into a bitmap also means the receiving software doesn't add its own compression artefacts.
The JPEG is decoded by your browser, with the EXIF orientation applied so portrait photos aren't sideways.
The BMP is written by our own encoder: a BITMAPINFOHEADER file for 24-, 8- and 1-bit output (bottom-up rows padded to 4 bytes, as Windows expects) and a BITMAPV4HEADER with BI_BITFIELDS channel masks and an sRGB colour space for 32-bit with alpha. 8-bit files get an exact palette when the image has 256 colours or fewer, otherwise a median-cut palette with optional Floyd–Steinberg dithering; 1-bit uses a luminance threshold or dithering.

Things to know
- BMP won't improve the photo. JPEG's compression artefacts are baked into the pixels; BMP stores them faithfully but can't remove them.
- Expect 10× the file size or more. A 12-megapixel photo becomes a ~36 MB 24-bit BMP. Shrink the longest edge first if the target device has a small screen.
